What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is an individualised, personalised, holistic and science based approach to medicine. It uses a holistic and systems biology approach and aims to look at the root cause of ill health.

It incorporates environmental, genetic, nutritional and lifestyle factors in assessing each individual rather than just treating symptoms. We seek to understand why an illness or health problem has occurred in that individual, taking all of the above into account.

From a biological and functional perspective, all body systems are interconnected so what happens in the gut for example, might lead to imbalances in hormones or affect the brain.

Functional medicine can be useful in a range of problems and often focuses on the gut but can be very useful in chronic and more complex conditions such as autoimmune conditions, fatigue, chronic pain and mental health.

The practitioner and patient work together to look at the history, nutrition, lifestyle, exposures and other relevant factors to develop a plan to reach health goals.

Sometimes testing can helpful in the diagnostic process, such as specialised microbiome, micronutrient, hormone, genetic or metabolic testing.
